I read a sad case today of a young writer who had had her story rewritten into illiteracy by a so-called publisher, who then abused her in email when she wrote to complain. She wsn’t getting paid for her story — instead she was actually buying copies of the anthology to show…

I wrote “Ravenclaw” almost a year ago, and it was one of the first songs that I wrote in one sitting. There’s a couple things I love about this song, and both of them are things that make the song so clearly a Motown song.
First, is the beat, the continual bum-bum-BAH, bum-bum-BAH. You can’t help but want to dance around like James Brown. Second, the call and response chorus, because as I was writing, I was already hearing (in my head) people singing the background vocals back. (Which the crowd at Wrockstock immediately caught on to during it’s premiere performance!)
The songs that I directly relate back to inspiring “Ravenclaw” are generally from the great Tina Turner. When we play the song live, we even go into “Proud Mary” for a little bit, because I can’t resist the desire to want to channel her during the song!
However, a song that I think encapsulates both the song style and production value I was trying to emulate is “River Deep, Mountain Wide (RDMH),” produced by Phil Spector. RDMH has a “frantic” quality throughout, in my opinion, which is driven by Tina’s voice, as well as the insane production going underneath. I didn’t even realize many of the similarities between this song and Ravenclaw until listening months and months later to RDMH on a Spector best-of. The chorus structure, horn section, driving percussion, it’s all there, and are all reasons why I adore this genre of music. I just wish I had the production value and talent of Phil Spector at my disposal!
“Ravenclaw” will be released on the new Tonks & the Aurors album ”A Familiar Beat” on June 12, 2012. I will be on tour with Riddikulus 2012 until June 21, and the album will go live on iTunes shortly after that. If you would like to preorder the album NOW, go to myStoreEnvy!
Mr. W himself linked to this in his blog. So amazing *_*
